i'm sitting at the big house where everyone else is staying, waiting for our lunch break to end so that we can head back into the field. we are sampling on this huge fallow field which is almost impossible break ground on. even tom, who is easily twice my size, is barely getting 3-5 cm of soil (we are expected to sample 10 cm increments of soil). it was quite hot and we covered a lot of land - i didn't realize we had been steadily going down an incline until we started to head back to the car, but we actually walked halfway across the island's width just to get from the car to where we had stopped sampling. the extra tough soil is particularly brutal since my hands and ribs are black and blue and i'm exhausted. i'm glad i packed a lunch today - since we came back before the other team and katie has the key, it wasn't possible to get into our house to make lunch. oops, we are about to leave! more later

back from the field and it is only 4:25. i'm sitting on the porch waiting for katie to come back from the field with tina, lauren, and mike.we are really going to have to figure out some kind of system with the key if we will be going on separate teams. i was really worried about the field today since i was going to be working tom and gisela, but i ended up enjoying it a lot. i mean, tina and mike weren't there to help if i couldn't break ground, but i made it work. plus, there was no excessive chatter, just stimulating, relevant conversations and silent, efficient work. not the kind of people i would to just hang out or chill with, but definitely my kind of people to work with. oh, and i made falafel for dinner tonight! maybe i can do this cooking thing after all! only time will tell...
