change of pace

saturday, when these open doors were open ended. today is actually like any ol' saturday because our day off has been moved to tomorrow, sunday. i guess this week will end like a normal week and i'll have this summer's first real 'case of the mondays.' i'm starting to get so excited about going home - this summer has been amazing but i am ready for the fall. all of my reservations about being a fifth year senior seem like a distant memory. this net year is going to be incredibly busy, but i've never been so excited about any given twelve-month span as i am about this coming one. my past has been riddled with misgivings and anxieties, worries about the whispers behind keystrokes and closed doors. even if the muttering still exists, i have certainty for the first time that i can remember - i know that i will be doing the exact right thing at the exact right time - no doubts or second guessing. i've never been so sure of anything before. there are times that i still have trouble facing my past, but who doesn't? i've lived more than i should have, but everything has led me to where i am, right where i want to be, so i guess i can't really fault myself. i'm so glad that things have worked out the way they have, past aside; it is such a relief to see the pieces fall into place. woke up this morning feeling a little ill and all of the farm was shrouded in mist. everywhere i turned, i saw drops of water lining spider webs in eerily beautiful strands of dewy pearls. not a bad way to start the morning.

i thought that we were going to have a rain day on account of the fog, but it never actually rained so we went to work despite the poor visibility and since of foreboding. tina is a little frantic about finishing now that the ersdays left on the island are numbered, so we set off and tried to blow through as many holes as possible. since we still have a good deal of sampling left along with a ton of backlogged chemistry and data entry, there is no chance of getting any excavation experience this time around. i guess next summer i really just need to try to find a field school to work at, or something. let's just hope that there is still enough time here in visingsö to get my pottery sherds. long lunch and i caught up on editing photos and typing up my blogs while watching an episode of true blood season one. came back around 4:30 and a long day of work left me invigorated, not exhausted like yesterday. attached a basket to my bike, took my water and my ipod, turned on believers never die and headed out for tunnerstad - the center of the island. i took the forest road all the way to brahe church, near the harbor, and then took the main road up to the intersection near the coop nara. stopped by oberg's kafe on the way to take pictures of the antique cars and headed back down the western road. all in all, it only took about thirty minutes and i felt great - that is definitely going to become my daily ritual. let's hope that the weather holds out tomorrow. tina moved our day off because there are supposed to be scattered showers tomorrow, but i'm hoping it will be nice enough to venture out. came back, had coffee and then made stir fried vegetables with sesame nuggets in mushroom soy. added photos to my blogs and talked to my dad for a few minutes. now, more true blood and then reading euripides. oh, and jess brought us cute little pastries for desert! i can't wait to return the favor tomorrow when katie and i (hopefully) bike around the island.

patience and passing the time

visingsö

today is our day off, but i started it off in much the same way as any other day - just an hour later. a local reporter from the newspaper came by today to take photos and interview time. we met up at the other house and all the students went down to näs borgruin to pose and pretend like we were sampling. it ended up being only jess and katie in the photos because they jumped in first. i guess i just wasn't as eager. it was raining, so aside from a group shot, hans , mike, and i didn't end up in any of the photos. the reporter politely took our names, though, so i guess we will have to see if we get our fifteen minutes in the, uh, bustling news of visingsö.

after the report was finished, me and jess dropped by the house to change from our field clothes and to gather our things before taking the ferry. we thought we would catch the ferry at 11:45 but we had the times mixed up - the ferry really left at noon. the harbor was a ghost town without the hordes of tourists. i guess that is one perk of crappy, rainy days - no one else really wants to sightsee. got over to gränna and the tension i had felt in the morning seemed to have been left on the island. katie and i had a fight last night over the division of labor in the house and i thought she had said something everyone since she went over to the house before me and jess. things seem to be easing up as the day goes on, but i guess only time can tell. stopped by the systembolaget but didn't get anything - i don't think i'm going to drink the rest of the project. well, if i change my mind i can always order it and have it sent across the ferry in about three days. i really just wish it wasn't so expensive. well, that and i would want to make sure i actually get my money's worth, not a portion of it. got a couple of gifts and some postcards which i still need to write. mike and i went from shop to shop, kind of just looking around and wasting time before we headed back to the same old, same old on the island.

there was a strange shop full of book piles and odds and ends where i bought a neat photo book of french sites- maybe i will try to write about them at some point. i always love looking through old photos and postcards, it brings me to a different time, a different place. i love taking photos so that others can see what the world looks like through my eyes, so it is always an interesting exercise to see the world through another's eyes. read lord of the rings for a while, took a shower, watched true blood season one, the season premiere of weeds and the second episode of the latest season of mad men, after which i sent mike a long overdue email about this summer. pretty  lazy day, but i hope to read much more before the night is over. well, reading turned into skyping and only about twenty minutes of reading because i was suffocating trying to read under my comforter - our house is basically a sauna by the end of the day. i really wish there were doors or just a touch more privacy at the house so that i wouldn't be at the mercy of lights out and prying ears and eyes.

weekends at work

i can't believe that it is already august. classes start in twenty three days and somehow two whole weeks have passed since i left the US for the second time this summer. twenty more days of survery. no, make that seventeen, then i fly out at nine in the morning on the twenty second. the days are going by in a blur, but i still haven't found myself counting down the days in the same way that i was in albania - it is really more a matter of disbelief that i have already been here this long. woke up a little bit before seven, my heart racing. maybe it is something about getting more than six hours of sleep a night on a regular basis (for a change), but i have been dreaming much more frequently since i've been here. last night, one my recurring dreams repeated itself once more, these varying images of missing my flight or train, thoughts of packing.  last night i couldn't manage to carry all of my bags - i kept switching what went in each bag, worried about what i could bring back with me, what could go through security and what could not. before i knew it, i was out of time and had missed my flight. i know it shouldn't unsettle me as much as it did, but i really felt like i had disappointed and thrown everything into chaos, that i had screwed up, which made it a bit hard to go back to sleep. breakfast with three people in our little kitchen was kind of a complicated shuffle, but extra company is definitely beneficial. it looked a little overcast, but promising, but as soon as we stepped outside it started misting. went outside to try to write and tina said that we would just hang out until eleven, when roman was planning to take us over to the brahekyrkan again. as we were all sitting around the living room, nez mike jess and i started talking about tattoos, which was refreshing. well, it was refreshing to talk to people who interact with tattoos in the same way that i do. it is really about art, expression, meaning, not just showing out or something. i know some people don't assign meaning to their tattoos, and for some that is the only way that tattoos can 'stay' relevant all of their lives. maybe it is the same for everyone, but loud, obscene tattoos just don't seem like the best life choice or something that you would really want to have when you are eighty - family or not. i don't know, maybe depressing tattoos aren't the answer either, but to each their own. we left for the church and tina arranged for someone to unlock the staircase so we could head up toward the bell tower. we went up to the king's chapel and then into the rafters to see the old walls which bring into question the age and original use of the church.

after the church chapel, we kept climbing up until we reached the clock and bell tower level - stepping over a few dead birds in the process. going up spiraling, tiny stone steps in pitch black darkness put me to the edge of panic, but somehow i managed to brave the set of stairs twice - thought once it was not on purpose. katie and i climbed too high to begin with, but that is what happens when you send two people up first who don't know where they are going or where to stop. hung out in the entrance way of the church waiting for the rain to let up, then stopped by the store on the way back. i feel like we are always going to the store, but maybe that is just because i'm always working with tina and she pays for the groceries. i think that is going to stay that way (working with tina, that is) until the end of my time here after what tom said today. on the day that we tried to finish the pea field and started work on the forest, he made us quit after two or three holes and has made it sound like i couldn't tough it because i'm a girl ever since. this project is comically easy in terms of physical exertion and risks, but somehow the fact that i'm a girl prevents me from jumping across a small ditch? the problem is that he has issues walking across any surface, nonetheless a difficult patch of the forest in the rain and he couldn't cut it - he made us go back to the car early. today while we waited to leave to meet roman, he openly insulted me in front of a room full of people, along with katie. i have been letting the slightly chauvinistic comments slide, but saying that a girl shouldn't work in the forest was too much - and he wouldn't let it go. unprofessional, inappropriate, and unfounded - not the kind of triple threat you want to strive for. came back to the cottage after the store and watched the rest of inception. took a short nap, downloaded and edited photos and watched true blood while writing. jess and katie both went on separate walks which gave me about an hour of uninterrupted alone time - something i haven't had in two weeks. hallelujah! now veggie sausage and dinner with the rest of the crew at the big house. not too shabby - a lazy sunday after all.

new twists

so, my health is starting to weight on me more and more. i know it isn't good to dwell and i haven't really been fixated on it lately, partly because of my more imminent issues with my finger. i can't help but let it slowly slip back in my consciousness. maybe it is the bleak weather, the long days with nothing to do but face my own thoughts, but the fear is slowly seeping back in. i didn't receive my latest test results before i left, but the last thing that i want to see when i turn my phone back on is a voicemail telling me that i have to come back for the next battery of tests. i already postponed surgery in january, so this is really all dramatic tension leading up to the inevitable. i just don't really care about this anymore - i'm never going to be healthy. i wish i could live a normal life, have my carefree twenties but i guess that is luxury that i won't be afforded. i don't think about the ramifications as much as before, what the future holds or more importantly, what futures aren't even possible. oh well, not the kind of thing i should be thinking about as i wait to load into the car and head out into the field. now it is time to face the bleakness of the landscape instead of the dull gray of the uncertain future.

---

hans went into the forest with tom, gisela, and katie, while mike went back to the tage karlsson fields with myself and tina. i thought it was going to be a long day of high winds, but the winds kept shifting and started to bring in rain from the impending clouds. the wind would shift, then back again and we were able to prolong the inevitable return to the car. headed back around 11:45 and hung out at the big house, waiting for the other team to arrive. i didn't want to go back to the cottage because the details were a bit fuzzy about what the rest of the day would hold. had a veggie burger - i don't think i have ever eaten veggie burgers this frequently in my life. at ten til one, we found out that we should have already left to go meet up with a GPR specialist who was visiting from the jönköping museum. drove down to the harbor and followed he and klaus to the russian graveyard. klaus and his family joined - they are bit odd. they went around picking up frogs and mushrooms, but they did afford me at least one funny photo in the process.

apparently, russian and polish prisoners of war were held on the island at the brahe castle by the harbor and then buried at this graveyard in the forest and now the russian government wants to know how many russians died. last year was some kind of anniversary and the russian government came in and symbolifcally covered the graves with soil from "the motherland" and now they want some kind of scientific proof of the history and extent of those who were held and died on the island. after the graveyard, they brought to the gpr to the st. laurenti chapel to see if the structure extends beyond the excavated chapel and if any graves are in the vicinity. after that, tome drove us to the brahekyrkan - a gaudy, baroque church, complete with the brahe crest on the outside of the church and a family tree inside. nothing like trying to buy your salvation, huh?

i was intrigued by the strange bell tower, so mike and i walked across the cemetery to see it while we waited for katie to emerge from the 'beauty' of the brahe church. i am becoming increasingly intrigued by the scandanavian variations of latin - i'll have to find that article i saw on jstor to learn a few of the differences.

after the church, we headed down to the castle near the harbor and explored, though the wind and near constant mist made it not as pleasant as i would have liked.

headed back around three and had a long break before the guys came over for dinner. i finally watched the mad men season premiere and started the first hour or so of inception - so good on both counts. betty is a dreadful human being, but i will be interested to see what the season holds. i didn't have enough time to finish inception, but maybe on monday or a future rain day. made falafel for everyone, traded more movies and music with hans and played half-remembered card games until 11:30. wine, gin, and some whiskey later, i was definitely a little drunk. we finally went upstairs, leaving the door open for jess, but i didn't hear her come in - we were both out cold. her alarm went off at 4:40, which woke me up but at least i knew that she made it in. woke up for good at eight, made eggs and talked with her a little - her short hair really makes me want to cut my hair again! i've come this far, though, so i should just keep growing it out...for now. i'm looking forward to getting bangs when i go home, though. went out into the field with jess, tina, and mike. tina paired me up to teach her how to sample and i was glad to have the chance to teach! it isn't that complicated, but i do love teaching just about anything. she learned really quickly and i'm glad she started on an easy field- hitting subsoil every sample on the first day should definitely be a confidence booster. we talked about how she grew up as a foreign service kid, about our boyfriends, about graduate schools...and then it got a little weird. i expressed confidence and certainty that i would be going even though i hadn't applied yet, and she snapped back, "why are you so sure?" i started to list off bullets from my CV and suddenly i become a braggart as a result of what was probably a defense mechanism or some other kind of impulse reaction. i felt bad and apologized if i came off as aloof, but it kind of unsettled me. split up into two teams after lunch and went with tina back to the far end of the field, while mike and jess went out into the petterson pasture. we talked about working in the music industry and about statements of purpose, ways to present yourself professionally. she found the earlier break in conversation a bit odd, too, but what can you do. i need the confidence, i need to know and make sure everyone knows i'm good enough to do this. tina has confidence in me, which is another little boost. i don't want to go to a place like michigan where i have to be reactionary, always on edge. i want a healthy, slightly competitive environment, not a survival of the fittest, cutthroat free-for-all. after the field, i took a shower, had my regular cheese and crackers, then cleaned up for the gallery talk over at persgarden.

roman ended up talking about 'the beauty in contemporary art,' not just rothko. he had some interesting personal insights about beuys and rothko, but once he turned from the first half of his presentation on the american school to their european contemporaries, including keifer and beuys, it got a bit depressing. we went down to the harbor for dinner after that and tried to invite jess, but she had gone out for a walk. there was an american cover band playing at the pizza place, so we just sat by the harbor listening to out of tune, slurred english coveres, eating margherita pizza and drinking mariastad's. we walked back to the house along the coast, which was beautiful. there is something so enchanting about walking in the woods in perfect silence, an eerie scandanavian dusk looming through the breaks in the canopy you.

we bought ice cream before the walk since it was going to take about an hour - i got knäck and brownie glass (ice cream), both of which were delicious. i'm still not quite sure what knäck is, but i sure did enjoy it. came back and checked my e-mail - the contact is coming slower and slower now and it has been about a week since i talked to my family for more than a few minutes. i feel a little bad that i missed ian's birthday but was there fore chris', but at least i got in touch with him briefly. talked to billy for about ten minutes, but i was falling asleep with my eyes open so i called it a night. i'm glad to have had something do outside of the house for a change, but it sure did do a number on my energy level. i'll be glad to have jess stick around in the house - it is a little bit more crowded, but maybe i will actually manage to have some time on my own. katie doesn't have a lot to do and gets a little bit moppy if i'm doing things on my own when she is bored, so maybe having someone else to talk to will enable me to take advantage of more introspective time.

another rainy day, another update. today tina tried to make katie do more data entry than hans and i since we did almost all of it ourselves last time around, but somehow she still managed to do just barely as much as everyone else. she is a really sweet girl, but her work ethic is going to kill me. talked to nez about art - apparently he grew up with de kooning's daughter in east new york back in the 70s. i mean, holy shit. i went on about my contradictory draw to extremely formal and extremely abstract art and he told me that someone is going to be giving a talk on rothko this weekend on the island! perfection. he said he finds rothko depressing, which i kind of understand - the passion and emotion of his warm palette can be extremely intense...the imperfection and the weight, a weight too great to really be held on a simple canvas. i kind of get it now that i think about it - i've always been drawn to the gravity of his work, but never really associated a particular emotion with my impressions - maybe that is just symptomatic of the perpetual weight i feel; it is never here nor there to assign an emotional value to an ever-present constant.
more lessons about grad school littered throughout the day, along with stories about millsaps past and present. it seems like everyone is colluding to make me an archaeologist...i think i just need to give it some time. i don't have that much time, but some long days of contemplating the advantages and disadvantages of both "separate" careers is in order. plus, i should i talk to mike. being a classical archaeologist would be hard, but if anyone could do it, it would be me. just thinking about summer after summer for the rest of my life being like this one makes me cringe. if anything i should pursue cultural anthropology, not archaeology. just because i am a bright, quick learner and hard worker doesn't mean that what i'm doing at the moment is my calling. i just need to find my place for me.

rainy days and thursdays

07.22.2010
visingsö, sweden

another day, another page. already this is starting to feel routine, but unlike albania this is the kind of routine i could get used to. tina told us there was a chance of rain, but it probably wouldn't amount to anything. lo and behold, it started drizzling on us on the walk over to the big house. drove out to the field anyway, went under three fences - two electrified and one barbed wire - to soil sample a cow pasture full of fresh cow patties (and irritated cows) only to take two samples before it started coming down. so to get back to the car, what did we have to do? cross those same three fences...electrified fences + rain = a bit nerve-wracking. we tried to sit it out but the rain wasn't giving up so we headed back to the house. tom and gisela dropped me at the cottage and i tried to get on the internet during the downtime before the other team came back...and it wouldn't work. i panicked and tried everything i could think of, but ultimately uninstalling/reinstalling later that night work. here's to hoping my prepaid one-month refill will work. katie came back and quelled my panic with coffee, cheese and crackers, and then we headed back over, sat around for a while and then went back to the field. i love working with those two - we had some good conversations about grad school and they both seem really interested in my research. they keep giving me little bits of advice, which is so nice. came back, made pasta, opened our bottle of portugeuse wine and had a long dinner. went to say goodbye to lauren who leaves for states via copenhagen early tomorrow morning. well, she wanted to take pictures, so we went for a walk that ended up turning into an hour and a half affair. the great part? it didn't even come close to making me tired or sore. maybe i will be able to lose some weight on this trip. plus, when it isn't raining, the sun reflecting off the lake is actually pretty brutal, so my tan is slowly working back up to my mid-albania peak. skinny, tan, fit, and confident - that is how i'm going to leave sweden. and to think i was worried about coming here...this place is paradise.

day off

07.19.2010
visingsö, sweden

so, our day was supposed to start at eleven, but actually did not until two. i set an alarm for 8:30 (katie doesn't have an alarm clock...which is going to get really old really fast) and fell back asleep until noon. woke up, had muesli and jordgubb (strawberry) yogurt and made an actual pot of coffee (as in, we made it in boiling water in a pot). three cups of coffee later, we are ready to head over to the other house, we talked to tina for a while and then went over to grunna with lauren and mike for errands. bought liquor (229 SEK for a fifth of canadian whisky) and i got my modem for 548 SEK (about $76). i must really want to talk to my boyfriend or something. then we came back and tina took us to a 12th century castle that has fallen off the end of the island. i learned a lot about the people of småland and some of the history of visingsö and then we hoped back in the car, drove along the west side of the island to go grocery shopping. on the way back, tina and i talked about u2 and then we stopped to look at an iron age graveyard. we got back , unloaded groceries and walked over to the other house for towels and sugar. came back and i installed my modem while katie cooked, then lauren and mike joined us for drinks. i really like both of them - i really have that they are leaving this weekend for copenhagen, especially since i just really want to go see mathilde (but time probably won't allow it). a lot of gossip about the university of buffalo all the time, which i'm sure will get old, but i'm just enjoying the company. tomorrow is the first day int he field, which makes me really nervous, but i'll do fine. i at least have some experience auguring with stan, so i'm not too concerned. plus, i feel like a huge weight has been lifted now that i know that no one really has any idea what their research will be. hell, lauren is heading home in four days and she still doesn't know. i'm exhausted, but excited. who knows what tomorrow will be like but i at least feel at ease here now.

first impressions

07.18.2010
stockholm, sweden

i'm starting to do that thing where i will be reading and my eyes start going a bit out of focus as i start to unintentionally fall asleep. in theory, katie should be here, well, either now or very shortly. our ride still won't be here until eleven at the earliest, so i need to snap out of it and wake up. i'm still feeling more than a bit ill, but at least my hands have stopped shaking and hurling doesn't feel imminent. on the flight, they served me a spicy pseudo-indian dish and it basically destroyed me. that coupled with a particularly small plane that was actually hot not cold for a change did not make for a pleasant seven plus hours. i was at the window, however, so that helped a little - i could just turn my head toward the window, away from the people and lose myself in the clouds, at least affording myself a breather from my stuffy surroundings. i still feel nauseous just thinking about it, to be honest. customs went relatively quickly and very smoothly, but i was sweating and ill to my stomach so i was over-anxious. the luggage did take quite a while to come out, just as tina had warned, but i couldn't quite put down the rising panic of my luggage not making it until i saw that pink luggage tag making its way around the carousel. let's rewind to the flight - once i got to my row, i wasn't very enthused...i was going to be sitting next to an older looking couple and somehow even in transit i was having flashbacks to being a third wheel like i was for so long, so many times. i told myself to just stay quiet, nonchalant and maybe i won't be in for a two-for-one- special on single-serving friends. no such luck - "so why are you headed to stockholm?" ...and so it begins. their names were terry and ted, early 50s, both semi-recently divorced (but not from each other) from cleveland. terry was really sweet - she has a fourteen year old son, sarah's age, and all she wants in the world is for him to be happy and to succeed (even though his passion is snakes). we talked a lot about travel, and despite the fact that (in theory) her age should make her more jaded than me, she was a breath of fresh air. she made me feel like everything i was going was moving towards something, even if i don't know exactly what that something is. we reminisced about greece and italy (i have to go up north the next chance i get - i am really missing out from the sounds of it) and i told her all about berlin; she told me all about southeastern asia. i watched my big fat greek wedding, only because mike talked about it so much, listened to pet sounds as i drifted off to sleep. breakfast with hall and oates on the continental jukebox, then an episode of the office as we headed into our final descent. with the exception of exchanging money, changing shirts and envying all the hip european children who keep walking by me, that pretty much catches me up to the present. katie is late or didn't see me and i can't seem to spot her either. i've been sitting at this cafe table, too ill to drink coffee for over two hours, just perusing tourist pamphlets, magazines, and brochures. reading about stockholm makes me really want to explore it - i wonder how much of it i will get to see. it seems like such a hip, cool, interesting (aesthetically and historically) city - and looking at regional maps, it is crazy seeing how close i am to helsinki! just thinking about it is making my pulse rise just a little. i've seen a good number of backpackers which means i'm back in the developed world during high season, but i really wonder how they afford it. i really wish that money wasn't a factor. not because i want money to be no object, but rather that i would like to have just enough to not be concerned, to not just scrape by. now that i have been to other parts of the world, however, it is clear that it is all just relative. i've seen more of the world than a good chunk of any given population, but i just want more. maybe that is the american coming out in me, but i just can't get enough. i want to see more, i want to do it right, whatever that means. the more i see, the more i realize how much is out there and i really do have an insatiable desire for knowing it all; it being some indefinite something, all-encompassing, interdisciplinary, cultural, experiential understanding of everything. i really hope this trip turns out well - nothing too ambitious, no added stress outside of the project, and once i have a person who i can speak to face to face and get some real answers, i will feel so much better. not seeing katie isn't really setting my nerves in order.

---

as i was writing those last words, i saw katie walk by - her flight was about thirty minutes delayed and then customs, baggage, blah blah blah. she has a pack, about as big as the one i brought last summer and i feel guilty for bringing a suitcase - i just didn't want to live out of a backpack for another month, nor did i want to scrape by from laundry load to load, especially since i don't know if will we have a machine (note: we do). if anything, i'm overprepared, but hopefully that will save me money. i didn't bring a towel and i can't find any, which blows. katie let me borrow hers so i could take a much needed shower, but i will just have to sort it all out tomorrow. tom finally showed up at noon, but the time went by so quickly - partly because of the espresso and partly because of the good conversation. katie is a classicist/anthropologist who is obsessed with the romans, though i think she would like greeks more if she had more than her self-taught ancient greek course in her background (though that is still really a work in progress). she smokes, swears, is a little rough around the edges and a self-proclaimed 'dirty hippie.' plus, she is a vegetarian to boot. tom brought us to the car where gisela was waiting and the drive began. we had to do some paperwork at the car rental place and then started our drive. once we passed through stockholm proper, we stopped at a highway-side cafe that reminded me of corinth. katie and i opted for cheap wafers for lunch, which i offset with a $3 coke. i still wasn't feeling too well and we had three hours on the road ahead of us - it was almost worth spending that much on it. as we were leaving the restaurant, gisela got a call from tina saying that one of the only two ferries that passes from grunna to visingso had crashed into the dock, so we might not even be able to get to the island. we finally got there, expecting the worse (and skipping the stop for a G3 modem so i could have internet on my computer to ensure we got on a ferry eventually), but we were actually able to put the car in line for the ferry that left in an hour, no problem. the little village was bustling, maybe because people were fighting off the lines for transport to and from the area, but i was still surprised. extremely quaint and charming, developed without feeling the least bit contribed, i already had a good feeling. they weren't trying to be anything other than themselves, and i love that. we opted for ice cream to pass the time and i got pistachio and strawberry. we talked about classics, comps, research interests, grad schools, jobs, and a bit about art. i fond out that i'm going to be missing the terracotta army exhibit by five days - damnit. so close, but yet so far - its just my luck. the ferry was invigorating and the island is gorgeous (though the ride on the ferry was a bit, uh, damp). the island is actually about the size of santorini, just flat because of glacial plains leveling the topography about 10,000 years ago. oh, i have spent all day trying to figure out who tom sounds like and i've decided it is a cross between michael mohr and phil ewbank. it was irking me all day! we got to our house, a small 'apartment,' more aptly called a cottage, and it is precious! i don't get my own room, but it so homey and welcoming, i'm looking forward to my time here. katie and i settled in after meeting our landlords and tina, unpacked, claimed beds (i get a queen!) and walked over to the other big house for dinner. no awkward conversations, no odd pauses, just a jovial, convivial family-like dynamic. tina is here with her husband and daughter, who katie and i spent a lot of time talking to and helping/watching her play games. apparently it isn't going to be as easy to get internet as i thought but tina let me send e-mail on her computer, so as long as billy actually checks his e-mail on either account, i should have been able to get in touch with him, in addition to my family. veggie burgers and pasta, then back to the cottage, listening to the sunlandic twins while i finished unpacking and making up my bed. shower and now time for some much needed sleep - see you tomorrow, sweden.

---

having katie as a roomate is going to be awesome. she and i seem to have a lot in common and we get along really well. this is the antithesis of albania...i have the best possible companion, and not the worst possible company (no exaggeration necessary). all is well here!
